Southern Tomato Pie

A comforting Southern dish featuring layers of ripe tomatoes, crispy bacon, fresh basil, and a creamy cheese filling in a flaky crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 deep dish pie shell (par-baked)
  • 4 large tomatoes (ripe and sliced)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 sweet onion (thinly sliced)
  • 68 slices bacon
  • 8 large fresh basil leaves (chopped)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese (shredded)
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup sour cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Pie Shell: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). If you haven’t par-baked your pie crust yet, roll it out and fit it into a deep dish pie pan. Create small holes in the bottom with a fork. Bake for about 10-12 minutes until slightly golden.
  2. Slice Your Tomatoes: Slice the tomatoes about ¼ inch thick and sprinkle with salt. Let them sit on a towel for about 10 minutes to draw out moisture.
  3. Cook the Bacon: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crispy (about 5-7 minutes). Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain and crumble.
  4. Sauté Your Onions: In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions and cook for about 10 minutes until soft and caramelized.
  5. Layer It Up: Layer half of the tomato slices in the pie shell, followed by onions, crumbled bacon, and half of the basil. Repeat the layering process.
  6. Mix the Creamy Filling: Combine cheddar, mozzarella, mayonnaise, and sour cream in a bowl. Stir until smooth, and spread it over the final layer.
  7. Bake to Perfection: Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Tent with aluminum foil if it darkens too much.
  8. Cool & Serve: Let the pie cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Serve warm with a sprinkle of fresh basil on top. Pairs well with a side salad.
