A comforting homemade hamburger steak with rich mushroom gravy, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion (sliced)
  • 8 oz mushrooms (sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form the Patties: Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, about ¾ inch thick.
  3. Heat the Skillet: Get a large skillet hot over medium-high heat, add olive oil and let it warm up.
  4. Cook the Patties: Add the patties to the pan, cooking for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through.
  5. Remove and Rest: Transfer the patties to a plate, covering them with foil to keep warm.
  6. Grill the Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add butter and onions, sauté until softened, then add mushrooms and cook until golden.
  7. Make the Gravy: Add flour to the pan, stirring; then whisk in beef broth and seasoning, simmer to thicken.
  8. Combine and Serve: Nestle the patties back into the gravy, let them soak for a minute or two, then serve hot.

Notes

Serve with creamy mashed potatoes, buttery corn, or a simple green salad. Add fresh herbs for garnish.
