Fluffy Orange Cream Scones

Delightful orange cream scones that are fluffy, bursting with citrus flavor, and perfect for breakfast or brunch.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tbsp orange zest (about the zest of 1 large orange)
  • 1/2 cup cubed butter, cold
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream, plus more for brushing
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 Tbsp butter, melted
  • 11 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest (optional, for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Combine the egg, sour cream, heavy cream, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl.
  5. Bring the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and fold gently to combine.
  6. Shape the dough into a 1-inch thick circle on a floured surface.
  7. Cut the dough into 8 wedges or use a round cutter.
  8. Brush the tops with extra heavy cream.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Make the glaze by mixing powdered sugar, vanilla, orange juice, and optional zest.
  11. Glaze the cooled scones and serve.

Notes

Great with tea or coffee. Scones can be frozen and reheated for a quick treat.
