Best Patty Melt Ever

A comforting classic combining juicy beef patties, melted cheese, and crispy rye bread for a nostalgic diner experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 lb. Ground Beef
  • 4 slices Rye Bread
  • 2 slices Muenster Cheese
  • 2 slices Cheddar Cheese
  • 1 tsp Mustard (divided)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce (divided)
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • Pinch Salt
  • Pinch Pepper
  • 1 small Onion (sliced thin)
  • 1 tsp Red Wine Vinegar
  • 2 tbsp Mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp Dill Pickle Relish
  • 2 tbsp Ketchup

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a medium skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until they turn golden brown—about 10-15 minutes.
  2. Prep the Burger Patties: While the onions are cooking, take your ground beef and gently form it into a patty. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook the Patty: Heat a grill pan or another skillet over medium-high heat. Add another tablespoon of butter and let it melt. Place the beef patty in the pan. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side, then flip.
  4. Add the Cheese: As soon as you flip the patty, place the Muenster and cheddar cheese on top. Allow it to melt while cooking for another 3-4 minutes.
  5. Toast the Bread: In a separate skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of butter. Spread some mayonnaise and mustard on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place the bread butter-side down in the skillet and toast until golden and crispy.
  6. Assemble Your Patty Melt: Once the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted, layer the beef patty with melted cheese and caramelized onions between two slices of toasted bread.
  7. Grill the Melt: Return the assembled sandwich to the skillet and grill on each side for an additional 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Slice and Serve: Remove from the skillet, let it rest for a minute, then slice in half.

Notes

Serve hot with crispy fries or a crunchy salad. For added flavor, try a dipping sauce with extra ketchup and dill relish.
